Mammals
This image of a young fox was runner up in the National Geographic UK photographic competition 2023 in the wildlife category. The soft light of the sunset made a perfect backdrop.
Birds
One of a prettiest and most elusive birds in the UK, the bearded tit, also called the bearded reedling lives deep in the reedbeds in just a few places in the UK. To see them is always very special.
Owls & Raptors
I am a little obsessed with owls and was extremely lucky to be able to observe this family of little owls. These owlets were waiting for mum to return with some food.
Kingfishers
As one of our most exotic looking birds in the UK, I thought they deserve their own gallery. The bright blue colour you perceive is due to a phenomenon called structural colouration. So while the coloured pigments in the kingfisher’s feathers are brown, you actually view them as a brilliant blue and the colours change in different light, sometimes looking more green.
